Sachin Tendulkar and Muttiah Muralitharan nominated for the 2011 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award
Star Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar has been nominated for the 2011 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award. He will be contesting with the Sri Lankan spin wizard http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Muttiah-Muralitharan-c78157 for the accolade.
The batting maestro, who was named ICC Player of the Year, will also have to compete with the Formula One driver Sebastian Vettel and the tennis star Rafael Nadal for the prestigious award.
The batting prodigy of India has been consistent through ages and the 16-year-old boy who made his international debut some 21 years ago in Karachi is performing brilliantly with same antagonism at the age of thirty seven. He has had a successful
2010 season seeing him tumbling various records and setting some for the first time in the history of cricket.
He became the first international player to cross a 200 in an ODI when he struck an unbeaten 200 against the Proteas in February. He also became the first batsman to compile 14,000 Test runs while playing against visiting http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 side
in Bangalore in October. Sachin is just a ton behind fifty of Test hundreds. The 49th hundred was scored by him during the same Bangalore Test in which he had crossed 14,000 runs.
The Government of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 has also bestowed the prolific batsman with various awards including Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Shri, and Arjuna Award. In 1997, Sachin was also one of the five Wisden Cricketers selected in 1997. He was conferred
with an honorary rank of Group Captain by the Indian Airforce earlier in June this year. Last month ICC named Sachin as its ambassador for the 2011 World Cup event.
Three football players - Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi and Diego Forlan - are also looking forward to become the ever first team player to pick the accolade.
The Laureus World Sports Award recognizes the sporting achievements of players during one calendar year and is the premier accolade on the international sporting almanac.
The names of the six Nominees for the premier sporting honour will be selected by the Laureus Media Selection Panel and are expected to be announced in January next year. The Laureus World Sports Academy, consisting of the 46 legendary sportsmen
and women of all time, will then chose the final winner from that list of nominees. The award ceremony will be held in Abu Dhabi on 7th of February, 2011.
