Sachin Tendulkar named ICC Cricketer of the Year
Sachin Tendulkar has been named the ICC Cricketer of the Year, beating India teammate http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757’s Hashim Amla and England’s Graeme Swann to the award.
Tendulkar, no stranger to breaking records during the course of his 21-year career, added more impressive feathers to his cap during the period taken into consideration for this year’s award, becoming the first player to reach 17,000 ODI runs across his career and also the first player in ODI cricket to post a double century; finishing unbeaten on 200 in India’s ODI against South Africa in Gwailor on February 24th.
The 37-year-old has been equally potent in Test cricket over the past 12-months, scoring six centuries over the relevant timeframe in a total of 1,064 runs made in 10 Tests.
It’s the first time the Little Master has won the award since it was introduced by the ICC in 2004. The ICC’s Cricketer of the Year award has previously been won by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shivnarine-Chanderpaul-c90073 (2008) and Mitchell Johnson (2009).
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750’s Mr Reliable at the top of their Test batting order, Sehwag missed out on the big award but was named the ICC’s Test Player of the Year ahead of Tendulkar, Amla and South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn.
Sehwag made six Test centuries during the awards period including a high score of 293 (his career-high Test score is 319) against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 last December. Had the 31-year-old managed to make those seven extra runs to bring up his triple ton, he would have been the first player in Test cricket to reach a 300 or more on three occasions.
Sehwag finished the series against Sri Lanka having made more runs than any other play, a total of 491.
During the 12-month voting period, Sehwag made a total of 1,282 runs at an average of 85.46 in the 10 Test matches he played.
South Africa’s AB de Villiers was named the ICC’s ODI Player of the Year ahead of Tendulkar and Australia pair Shane http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Watson-c96326 and Ryan Harris.
De Villiers scored 855 runs at an average of 71.25 during the voting period, including four 50s and four centuries.
Towering England paceman Steven Finn, 21, was named the Emerging Player of the Year at the awards, while http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 during February.
Tendulkar and Sehwag, as well as Swann and Amla, were also selected in the ICC’s World Test Team of the Year. The ICC awards are based on the players’ performances between August 24th 2009 and August 10th 2010, a timeframe that has included the 2009 Champions Trophy in South Africa and the 2010 World Twenty20 in the Caribbean.
