Sachin Tendulkar statue for Wankhede Stadium under consideration – Cricket News Update
A proposal for erecting a statue of India’s modern great, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Tendulkar-c2556, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, was reportedly put forth at a managing committee meeting of the Mumbai Cricket Association last month, in honour of his record of a 100 international
centuries.
“It is a very big achievement for all, especially Mumbaikars. So, this would be an ideal way to recognise his monumental feat. Wankhede is his home ground and we need to do something special,” a source explained.
Sachin, already the record holder for most ODI runs (18426 from 463 matches) and most Test runs (15470 from 188 matches), amassed a record-breaking 100 hundreds after scoring his 100th ton against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 during the Asia Cup in March this year,
a feat which earned him accolades from all quarters.
A gift of a 100 gold coins, worth approximately Rs. 28 lakhs, had already been announced for the legendary cricketer by the MCA, and the commemoratory statue is the latest in a string of proposed honours for Tendulkar’s achievement of a 100 centuries.
He was also awarded a 100 gold coins, and a golden bat and ball last month by the Cricket Association of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders .
The source went on to explain that the idea had been obtained from the statue of Sir Don Bradman which stands outside the Adelaide Oval in Australia. Statues of legends such as Bradman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shane-Keith-Warne-c89672 have also been erected
at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
“Sir Don is http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Abdullah-Al-Matin-c41661. At the moment, we just have a stand named after the legendary batsman, which is not enough,” the source said.
However, the proposal has been challenged by various MCA members, who claim that erecting a statue of the player is not a feasible idea.
“There is already a huge space crunch at the Wankhede Stadium during matches. So, erecting a statue is not practically feasible,” said another source. “Another reason is the statue may get damaged in crowd frenzy.”
