Sachin’s nomination to parliament approved by Indian president – Cricket News Update
India’s most celebrated batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Tendulkar-c2556, continues to add to his ever-growing list of achievements, as the 39-year-old was recently nominated, by the ruling Congress party, to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament – a move which
the Indian president went on to approve.
The development came about during the right-hander’s meeting with the Indian Prime Minister http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Manmohan-Singh-c74213 on April 26, when he was offered one of the 12 seats in the upper house reserved for individuals “having special knowledge or practical experience
in respect of such matters as literature, science, art and social service.”
The batsman accepted the offer, which was then formally approved by the home ministry and then the office of the President.
Tendulkar is among the most revered batsmen in India, and has amassed a long list of both cricketing achievements, and other honours. Not only does the Little Master hold records such as his recently completed 100 international centuries, most runs in ODIs
(18426 runs in 463 matches), and most runs in Tests (15470 runs in 188 matches), he has also been awarded the Padma Vibhushan (the second highest civilian award in India, conferred on him in 2008) and been made an honorary Group Captain of the Indian Air Force
(in 2010).
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed their approval of the move, stating that a sportsman of Sachin’s caliber deserved the honour.
“We are happy that Tendulkar's services as a sportsperson has been recognised," Ratnakar Shetty, the board's chief administrative officer, told PTI. “He's been a true ambassador for the country and he deserves it.”
Cricket experts, however, expressed reservations with the move. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sanjay-Vijay-Manjrekar-c88628 claimed that the role was not suited to Sachin’s temperament, while Harsha Bhogle pointed out that the cricketer did not have the necessary experience to take up the responsibility.
However, Sachin’s nomination, given his status in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ravi-Shankar-c84192 Prasad, expressed immediate pleasure at the new development.
“Sachin is a great player. We are proud of him. If http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chinnadupargea-Sachin-c50607 is being nominated surely he will devote some time to Parliament,” he said.
