Sadam Ali defeats Franklin for the WBU Welterweight Championship – Boxing News
Sadam Ali of Brooklyn was successful in the ring against fellow hometown fighter Franklin Gonzalez for the WBU Welterweight Championship at the debut of Worldkid Promotions at the Aviator Center in Brooklyn. Ali, the 2008 US Olympian, gave in his best to
make the show successful. The fight was outstanding, with both the fighters striving hard to grab the victory. However, Ali made it to the mark in the last 38 seconds of the fight.
The fight started off slow and Franklin was dominating. Franklin’s right hand blows caught Ali. Initially, Ali looked helpless, especially in the first round. The crowd was chanting for Ali, and the Brooklyn pugilist regained his form in the second round.
Ali electrified the crowd and intensified their chants when he delivered a combination of punches to Gonzalez.
The fourth round had Gonzalez defending himself against Ali, who was by now all warmed up. Ali was working on Franklin’s body, which became evident by the fifth round. Franklin was helpless and was breaking down. He was unable to do much against Ali’s power
shots to his body. By round seven, the crowd wanted Ali to knock out Franklin but Franklin defended himself well to pull the fight to round 8. However, round 8 was unlucky for Franklin. Ali delivered two knockouts and the fellow hometown pugilist gave up eventually.
After the fight, Ali was asked about his victory and he replied, “It feels good, it hasn’t hit me yet. I don’t realize I got a belt on right now. Hopefully in the future I’ll have the World title belt. This is a step up for me, I’m still climbing the ladder,
and in the future you’ll see more.”
He was then asked whether he thinks his fight was a good show for the crowd. Ali replied, “A lot of fights fell out, we only had five fights. That was a little nerve-racking. But when you have a good team behind you, have people who love you, it’s not so
hard and you stay focused.”
Ali enjoyed being crowd’s favourite. According to him, he could hear people saying ‘please knock this guy down’.
