My horses back gets sore. Right now I have and use a Fleeceworks half pad over a baby pad. However, My trainer does not think it is enought for him so she was me to get something more for horses with back issues. She showed me something she that is wool all the way thought and it does not budge when you put the saddle on. Do any of you guys use somthing like this?? any likes and dislikes?? and anything else you would recomand?? I plan on talking to a vet about it but would like to see what people on here think as well

  1. I can't recommend enough to use a good soft quilted pad, and get a good gel pad, I ride with a good quilted pad, and gel pad on all my horses whether in a western and english saddle, and they have not had any soreness problems.

Also if you are getting your horse collected a lot, and your horse isn't used to it, he will have a sore back for a whiel until he builds up muscle.

And when in doubt always have a vet take a look at it, which you are already doing so kudos to you!

    Good luck!

  2. u might need a bounce pad  or jell pad

  3. By sore, do you mean he's developing sores, as in rubs?

Or is he giving indications that the saddle is pinching or causing pressure points that're resulting in muscle spasms?  Also, is he showing soreness when ridden bareback?

It's pretty tough to fix a saddle that just doesn't fit properly by using pads - especially if the saddle is too narrow.  Is your horse mutton withered, and difficult to get a saddle to stay in place on?  The answer to your question really depends on what part of his back is coming up sore, and why, but in general I really like all wool pads, 1/2 inch thick.  Good idea to talk to a vet who specializes in back lameness.  Good luck!

  4. I've been using Koolback pads and Woolbacks.  Here's the link they have both English and western.

Print those out and see if your trainer approves.

  5. i would suggest an actual saddle pad with a gel pad

  6. Try a jelly pad. There's a really great one that is made out of this squishy jell and has 'holes' in it. My schooling barn uses it on all of the horses to minimize back pain. It helps a lot!

  7. I assume your horse's back, saddle and teeth have been checked?

Medical problems aside, I can't recommend the Bay Jacobson Back pad enough!! :-)

  8. your best bet is probably a full gel pad and a brest girth to fix the saddle in place.
