Question:

Saddle slides on horse when going down hill?

I just bought a saddle, Big Horn Saddlery and I absolutely love it. I bought it without putting it on the horse I ride.

The horse I ride, has just about no withers. So it's hard to find saddles that even fit her.

Yesterday was the first time I used the saddle. When we went down hill, I kept having get off of her because the saddle had slid onto her neck, several times in only a couple of minutes.

My trainer suggested I use a croupier (<- not sure what it is, picture anyone?), and maybe use a breast collar. Would a back cinch work also? Different saddle blanket? I really want to find a way that I don't have to sell this saddle.

  1. The back cinch only helps hold the saddle down if you go up.

The croupier is a bit of tack that hooks to the back of your saddle and around the tail.  Make sure you get a good one and read up in its use.  But it does hold the saddle back.

The breast collar does the same thing up front to keep the saddle from sliding back.  If you commonly ride in such hilly terrain I would reccomend both and make sure you know how to put them on your horse and use them correctly.

    Happy trails
