World’s top spinner, Saeed Ajmal, on Saturday said that he planned on playing for Pakistan for at least the next World Cup in 2015, as he knows he is fighting with age, but expects to stay fit for as long as possible.
Speaking to newsmen, the spinner said, “I am currently 34 and I know my age won't let me play perhaps more than three years. But it's also a matter of fitness that can actually extend a player's life. I am optimistic that I can play at least till the 2015 World Cup before calling my time from the game."
Ajmal, who made his international debut at the age of 30, which keeping the norms in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 is quite late, made his mark in the international arena by becoming one of the top ranked spinners in modern-day cricket, as he ranks among the best in Tests and One Day Internationals (ODI).
Ajmal, played his first Test match at the age of almost 32, but that did not deter him as he has now bagged 107 wickets in 20 Tests. These stats make him a lethal bowler in the longest format of the game, while at the same time he is Pakistan’s number-one spinner in ODIs and T20s.
The spinner is flanked by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Abdur-Rehman-c41691 in the national squad and the two form a dangerous combination against the mightiest of batting line-ups in the world.
In his interview, he hoped that by the time he takes his final bow, a new spinner of world class level will be ready to replace him in the national team.
“I hope by the time I am ready to walk out, another Ajmal would be ready to take my place," Ajmal told ESPNcricinfo.
According to him, he will soon be opening his own cricket academy in his native city of Faisalabad, where he hopes to groom stars of the future.
Ajmal hoped that in a country that has a history of producing fascinating fast bowlers, his influence would now change the trend and encourage youngsters to take up spin bowling.
