Pakistani spinner Saeed Ajmal once again came under fire for his “suspect” bowling action, following Pakistan’s recent Asia Cup match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 in Mirpur, on March 18, 2012.
The off-spinner became embroiled in controversy following http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 earlier this year, when several batsmen complained about experiencing difficulty in reading his variations. The 34-year-old’s baffling spin was the key reason behind the Poms’ defeat, and he added fuel to fire by telling an English media house that he had special permission from the ICC to extend his arm beyond the allowed 15 degrees.
The comments caused uproar in the media, with the ICC quick to suppress the controversy by pointing out that no special dispensation had been provided.
However, the right-armer’s action was once again called into question, this time by the Indian team.
Despite their 6-wicket victory, the Indian batsmen were reportedly unhappy with Ajmal’s bowling action, and the BCCI is considering taking up the issue of the spinner’s oft-contested delivery called the ‘doosra’ (a googly bowled by a leg-spinner) with the ICC. Incidentally, Ajmal employed the doosra to dismiss http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Tendulkar-c2556 during Sunday’s match.
In light of this, the ICC has decided to clarify, one and for all, that Ajmal’s action has been cleared by the board.
“We do whatever protocol allows us to do and let us not forget that the match officials, the umpires are entitled to call any bowler, who has got a suspect action,” said http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Haroon-Lorgat-c61719, ICC chief executive.
“In Saeed Ajmal's case we have tested him, we have monitored him even in the live situations, he bowls within the allowed degree of tolerance. So there isn't any issue with him,” he explained.
“We need to be careful about what the eye sees and what the reality is. You are allowed to bowl with an arm that you don't straighten in the course of action and he is well within the degrees of tolerance.”
With formal clearance granted yet again, Ajmal will continue to feature as a key element of Pakistan’s bowling attack as they prepare to face-off against a yet undecided opponent in the Asia Cup final scheduled for March 22 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
