Question:

Safe Tourist Neighborhood in Rome, Italy?

I'm planning a trip to Rome with my family this spring. When it comes to hotels, I want to make sure we're in a safe part of the city. I don't know Rome at all, but I know all cities have areas that I won't want my mother walking around on her own. I don't mind if we're out of the center a bit. Any suggestions?

  1. I was there last year.  Don't stay near the church Santa Maria Maggiore.  Focus on hotels around Piazza Navona.

  2. Hello,

Most parts of Rome are very safe and you won't have any problems.  I would suggest staying away from the area past the termini station.  This area was very bad several years ago, but they have, for the most part, cleaned it up. The area from the termini to the colosseum has improved a lot and I would not hesitate to stay there.  Areas like around the pantheon, colosseum, piazza navona and via Veneto are nice areas to stay in.  This will cost you a little more than staying in the area near the termini.

As like any major city, you must be aware of your surroundings.  Don't flash jewelry or large wads of cash.  Most of the crime is petty like pickpocketing.  Nothing like muggings or attacks.  Buy a money belt and don't carry your camera in your hand, put it in a pocket or bag.  Your mom should have no problems in Rome.  I have been there many times and never had a problem.

Oh, one other thing.  I have been warned not to go to the Colle oppio and park where Nero's golden house is in the evening or after dark.  The park is lovely during the day but I was warned several years ago and have not ventured there after dusk.
