  2. I hate to be negative, but I think it would be almost impossible to find such a place on the open market. The Barbican Estate was built about 25-30 years ago when it looked like the population living inside the City of London would go to nearly zero. Apartments inside the estate are outrageously expensive, beyond the reach of almost any student without a massive trust fund. Here is an advertisement for a one bedroom for US$6000 per month. Most of the area is devoid of any low cost housing.

    ---------------

There is a link to a school inside the Barbican estate. If you explain who you are maybe someone will give you some advice. However, assuming you are not a trust fund baby you will probably have to ride the underground or the first capital express train from a cheaper part of the city. First capital connect trains go to the Barbican station and they would be faster than riding the underground.

    ---------------

Citadines apartment hotel can be as low as 86 GBP per night and it's within walking distance. It might be a good place to spend a few nights while you check out more affordable locations.
