  1. I respectfully disagree with Natalia on her premise that a driver has no control over what happens to a vehicle, such as loss of brakes or engine failure . Granted that a driver usually cannot prevent some mechanical malfunctions, nonetheless, the driver is still responsible for the safe handling the vehicle . And this where all drivers are deficient in operating a vehicle - we are not trained for and do not get to practice what to do in the event of an emergency, such as a blown tire at highway speed, or engine or brake failure coming down a hill . Driving safely means using a vehicle that is in good mechanical condition.

  2. B - safe driving includes making sure that your vehicle is safe to be there

You need to do the scheduled maintenance on it for it to be completely safe.

  4. I'd say false, although it's not so much a driver thing as much as an equipment safety thing.  Would a driver be able to compensate for sudden brake loss, engine overheating or a tire blow out?  The driver didn't cause these things nor does he have direct control over them.  However, by not seeing to the maintenance of the vehicle he may allow them to happen and thus be put in a position to overcome them.  If, though, he keeps his car in good repair, problems are much less likely.  Therefore the driver can pay more attention to things he can control: using turn signals, driving the speed limit, etc.

Edit: In reply to thud.fan - This is exactly why I said the Original Poster's statement was false.  It's up to the driver to make sure that his vehicle is in good repair.  A driver can't always prevent mechanical failure, but good maintenance makes it far less likely to happen.  That's part of being a safe driver.
