Safe places to live near Salem State College?

Question

I'm planning on going to college at Salem State College is Massachusetts, and I'm not going to be living on campus. My friend and I are going to get and apartment, but we want to make sure it's in a safe neighborhood. I'm looking to living somewhere fourty-minutes from the school at the most. If anyone knows of any really safe area's that would be great. Preferably like, twenty minutes, to a half hour from the school.

Actually an idyllic place to live would be Marblehead which is right on the water and only 4 miles away.

I would recommend living in Danvers, MA.  Nice quaint small town 11 miles away.
