Safe to buy gift card on Craiglist?

I saw a home depot gift card worth $610 but he is okay with $500 cash.

I plan to meet him in the home depot store and buy something worth $700 on the spot. If it works, I will pay him $500

Is there any risk involved?

It sounds like your plan have things covered.  You make the purchase with the gift card before paying him will ensure that the gift card is okay.

The only challenge I can see is if the deal falls through and he (and his buddies) knows that you have $500 cash with you.  May want to take a friend or two of your own.
