I am from the USA who just graduated from college and am moving to Manchester, UK to start my first job with a bank. Where do you reccommend living? I am just looking for a safe place to live as it seems like there is a lot of talk about many dangerous areas in the city of Manchester from the people on this board.

  1. I would find another job, Manchester is a truly horrible place to live and was voted the UK's official worst place to live 2007 (channel 4 television)

  2. Cheadle is nice and so is Hale and Altringham. Alderly Edge is very posh but I think Hale Barns and Hale are the nicest and safest. I don't recommend Salford someone has just been stabbed there :S

  3. Most of the places people have listed aren't actually in Manchester.

    Salford is a separate city.

Cheadle is in Stockport, a town to the East of Manchester, and Alderley Edge is in Cheshire- a completely separate county.

Hale is in Trafford and Prestwich is in Bury.

These places are all in the county of Greater Manchester, not the city of Manchester.

I live in Didsbury, and I think it's fairly nice. Like any major city, you'll get incidents all over the place, but they are few and far between here. It's meant to be the nicest place in Manchester, and it's where all the 'celebrities' live if they don't want to live in city centre flats. Richard and Judy lived in Didsbury... in fact their children went to my primary school. Chris Evans lived here too.

    Look on this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Didsbury

  4. Well South Manchester is pretty heavy in gun and knife crime, even Didsbury.  Try areas of North Manchester like Prestwitch and some areas of Salford (actually some areas are nice), Stockport and maybe Altrincham.
