traveling to nyc over labor day weekend. what is a safe but reasonable area to stay in?

Avoid Times Square, for whatever reason thats the place everyone wants to stay when they visit. Overpriced, crowded/noisy, tourist traps...chain restaurants and grungy hotels overrun with senior citizen/student bus tours. Stay in Greenwich Village, Chelsea or the Upper West Side. Nice areas, nowhere near as touristy, not as expensive. The Larchmont is one of the best deals in the city. A B&B experience in one of the best neighborhoods in the city, all for about $100 a night.
