Now I know there is no such thing as a safe gun. But What I mean is like a gun that you need to do something to be able to shoot a bullet.

Now I am under age I was just wondering cos Ive seen people who own guns and have children and you know just how curious kids can be so any help will do.

thanks

  1. I've always had a loaded handgun within reach...and I've been a parent. I've taught my son firearm safety, too, just as I was by my old man, and him by his. People are much dumber nowadays, though.

Two words: Parental responsibility. THAT is how you prevent firearm accidents.

  2. If you got kids around,  NEVER have a double action revolver.   There are no safeties on them and all the kids have to do is pull the trigger.   If they are small they often wrap their fingers around the grips,  put their thumbs in the trigger hole and use both thumbs to pull the trigger and they shoot themselves in the face.

SINGLE action revolvers are slightly safer but kids can figure out how to c**k them and again they shoot themselves or someone else.

A SEMI AUTO of 40-45 caliber is a good bet.   Load the magazine but do NOT rack the side,  keeping the firing chamber empty.   Keep the hammer down and flip on the safety.   For the kid to shoot the gun they will have to rack the slide,  which they probably can not do as it requires quite a bit of strength and coordination.  Some guns you can not rack the slide if the safety is on.   If they do manage to rack the slide without catching their fingers,  they have to flip off the safety and c**k the hammer if it is a single action.

However,  whatever you have should be locked in a combination safe that you can open easily but will stop a kid.   There are a number on the market for $50-150 that will keep a kid away from any gun you get.

(Unloaded guns with trigger locks are bricks.  You may as well not have one as by the time you unlock it,  load it and get ready to use it,  the intruder will already have killed you.)

  3. No matter what brand and model of handgun you buy, the gun is only as safe as the owner is. Thumb safeties, chamber indicators, grip safeties are all great but are worthless without a safety-minded user.

    Bottom line.

Added....I want to know who thumbs this down. Not because you hurt my feelings but because I want to see their answer and make sure I am not around them when they are handling firearms!

  4. An unloaded one

  5. All you need to do is get a gun that has a firing pin that is easy to  remove

so when you have it put up it wont fire no matter what you do to it till you put the firing pin back in.

also another method would be to buy one of the new guns that require a key to be able to use ( the key engadges a locking mechanism that keeps the firing pin from being able to come in contact with the casing thus preventing it from firing)

they are not that common but you should be able to find the company who makes them on google

just type locking handgun and it should come up

  6. one without ammo

  7. The owner is what makes a gun safe. And as such, my gun is treated with the respect that it is loaded. My kids are never allowed to see it or where I store it. I have trigger locks and magazine and gun are never together unless it is for security reasons.

  8. Just place a Trigger lock on it Most states require a safety device on loaded weapons when kids live or visit the house.

Vet-USAF / gun owner for life / have a CCW

  9. With respect, you have answered your own question.

    None.

  10. Its not the gun or the kids. Its the parents and what they do to make sure that the weapon is safe. Although there are guns out there that will only function if your biometric data matches that stored in the weapon.

  11. m-16 rifle

    hehehe just joking

  12. You can put a trigger lock on any gun, revolvers are safer in my opinion it is easier to check to see if  they are loaded, you can take the clip out of an automatic and a bullet can still be in the chamber. Also for home protection revolvers do not jam and you can leave the first chamber empty for further safety. Children should never be able to get their hands on a gun even with a trigger lock they should be secured where kids cannot get to them.

  13. there something you need to do to shoot a bullet... press the trigger. you can get trigger locks so you cant fire the gun without having a key to unlock a little mechanism on the gun, and you can also buy a safe. most semi auto handguns have safety switches where you cant fire the gun if its on safety. there is such thing as a safe gun if theres a responsible owner. you sound like u dont know anything about them so id suggest you take classes first. one manufacturer that doesnt put safetys on its handguns is glock. also u can keep the ammo or loaded magazine away from the firearm that way even if they do get to the gun its not dangerous although u should treat all firearms as if they were loaded (just a lil tip)

  14. The safest way for both the children and the owner is to keep the loaded magazine(s) separate from the firearm. The magazine's location must be known yet not too easily accessible to children (high places for example). Trying to find your tiny key while under stress and attack is a sure-fire way to get harmed. Loading a close-by magazine and racking a round into the chamber will always be faster than fitting the key or spinning the password on a combination lock.

That being said, my personal choice(s) would be the new Springfield XD, or a 1911, or a Beretta 92; all of which have thumb safeties.

  15. don't matter which gun ya get, you'd just better hope no one breaks in while ur sleepin.

  16. that's why they have trigger locks.then they are all safe!

  17. In 99.99% of guns all you need to do is pull the trigger to shoot a bullet. I would recommend asking your parents about getting a gun with a safety lock on it. Always be supervised INTENTLY when using guns. Remember, the gun is ALWAYS loaded.

  18. You're right. There is no such thing as a safe gun, and all firearms should be treated as if they are loaded and ready to fire. That being said, the best solution is to either lock up the gun or put a trigger lock on it, or both.
