Question:

Safest scooter for a newbie?

OK, I know that there is an element of danger in riding ANY two-wheeled vehicle, and that the most important factor is the rider (taking lessons, proper gear, etc.). In addition to those common-sense considerations, are there one or more scooters that would offer more safety than the others? If so, what is the reason that one might be safer than another? (I'm talking good quality; not cheapies.) I'm considering 100cc to 150cc. Also, would a three-wheeler be safer than a two-wheeler? If so, whick is safer--2 in front or 2 in back? (I know, I asked a bunch of questions--pick and choose if you don't feel like answwering them all.) Thanks!!

BTW, I am 5'6" and approx. 175 lbs.

  1. The 'safest' scooter would probably be the Piaggio MP3.  The smallest they make is the 250cc model and it is definately quality and not a cheapy.  It has two wheels in the front but its different than a trike.  The wheels 'slalom' and tilt when you lean.  Its safer because you can go over all kinds of terrain that would wipe you out on a normal two-wheeled scooter.  The front end can also lock by pressing a button so you dont even have to put your feet down when stopping!

Theres a guy on the website below that has one that can tell you all about it.  Also feel free to ask any other questions there too :)

  2. where I live mopeds and scooters are considered the same thing.  They are only as safe as the rider is responsible though.  For better quality and warranty get a name brand like honda or yamaha.  I don't know much about the 3 wheeled ones so I can't help you there but do you have a link to these, I would like to see one?  Just take it slow with whatever you get and watch out for the others vehicles that may not see you and always wear a helmet.
