Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed has defied age odds, which had prompted a heated debate about his retirement plans earlier this year, to show some toughness and excellent game skills in the four games played so far by him this season.
Some particular notable changes in his game witnessed by the team are his remarkably groomed leadership skills. He has offered on-and-off field help to many players from and outside Ravens.
He said of the opportunity to pass on the knowledge and experience of the game to youngsters:
"I think when you get to the latter part of your (career), you really begin to realize what it's all about. I've always had an open-door policy to these guys to come to my house, watch tape together or just give them information. We have a lot of young guys,
and this business can take a toll on you if you let it. You just try to give them as much information as possible, whether it's on or off the field."
Some media reports had triggered a controversial debate about Reed’s plan of retirement from the game this year but later the player rejected them categorically.
He said the reports were misquoted from his remarks that he had decided to take some time out of the game to rest and be busy away from the football field.
He has boasted his potential and hunger for the game, hoping to continue playing for another five to six years.
Although he might not be able to play for another half a decade as he thinks, certainly his current fitness level shows that he still has got a couple more years to go. This will depend on the Ravens as well because after expiry of his current contract at
the end of this season, renegotiations of fresh terms should determine scope of his NFL future.
The team have so far been content with his fitness and form and there is a greater possibility that he gets another contract extension from them.
