  1. Basically, there are active and passive features

Active are those that prevent crashes.

Passive are those that help you to survive when you have one.

Active - the list is not exhaustive...:-)

    - ABS - anti-lock brakes with all add-ons (EBD, EBA)

    - TCS - traction control, prevents spins when moving on snow, ice, water

    - DSC (ESP, DSP) - dynamic stability control, helps to prevent a car from skidding under sharp emergency manouvers

    - some newest cars have sensors that warn a driver when driving off the lane or too close to a car in front, headlamps that turn with the steering wheel so you can "see behind the corner".

    Passive

safety belts, airbags, head restraints, crash-zones - the car is constructed in such a way so that metal is crushed and twisted out of passanger's area and absorbs most of  energy generated in a crash.

There are also some goodies like - hazard lights start to flash automatically when airbags are deployed, engine is switched off, fuel is cut out

Check out the links, history, current campaigns... etc.

  2. Anti-lock Brakes

    Traction Control

    Air Bags

    Limited-Slip Differential

    Active Stability Management

  3. The most important safety feature in any vehicle is YOU - the driver!...The items in vehicles touted as safety are actually protection devices, seat belts, airbags, ABS and the rest...None of these will keep you from being involved in a collision or from being injured...Only your brain - your reflexes, judgment, discipline, experience and intelligence will keep you out of trouble behind the wheel - and even that may not be enough.

    All the best.
