Question:

Safety in Manhattan, hostels?

Hello!

Is NY a safe place for a 26 girl alone?

I am thinking in going to NY and staying in a hostel located between Chinatown and Little Italy, exactly it is the Sun Bright Hostel in 140 Hester St, 10013, New York. Is that zone a safe place?

I found another one cheap, Bowery's Whitehouse Hotel of NY, 340 Bowery, New York is this place safer?

Any streets I should avoid at all costs? (besides using my common sense which says i won't walk alone at night in the streets)

Thank you!!

  1. I've stayed at the Sun Bright Hostel and had a great time.  It's not the Four Seasons.  It's very spartan, but surprisingly clean.  It's very convenient that it is right between Chinatown and Little Italy.  Both of which I wanted to see.  I could also travel to other areas fairly quickly as cabs and the subway were nearby.  I never felt I was in any danger when I was out there, although the back alleys in both neighborhoods always felt a little creepy.

As for Bowery's Whitehouse Hotel, BEDBUGS GALORE!!!  I'd rather sleep in a dumpster than sleep there.  Walls so thin, you'd think it was cardboard instead of sheetrock.  Bathrooms were dirty, bedding seems like it gets cleaned once a month, including the sheets.

For a much better stay, try the Central Park Hostel, 19 West 103rd Street Near Central Park West New York City, NY 10025

For about $34 a night it is much nicer, safer, cleaner place to stay in than any other Hostel in NY.  I wish I had discovered this gem before I tried all the others...

Best of luck on your trip.

  2. Some places I wouldn't go too cheap and New York is one of them.  The crime can be really violent and even in nice hotels I've had scarry experiences.
