Question:

Safety tips in Madrid?

I am going to Madrid on Saturday and I would really appreciate some tips on how to behave and not get robbed or raped or anything like that. I'll be with my dad the first couple of days and then for three weeks, I'll be with a CTY class. If any of these details make a difference: I am 13 (but I look a lot older. 16-18 is the usual range of guess that I get), I am part hispanic so I do look tan and dark haired, I'm pretty busty; I only mention this because it gets me (unwanted) attention in America so idk about in Spain.

thx and any other tips/ info is welcome

  1. You're going to get attention, simply because you are foreign, though that is less noticeable in Madrid than in some other parts of the country.

You don't need to worry about rape.  It's pretty rare, and more often people who know each other.  Use common sense, and don't worry too much.  (obviously, there are exceptions, but don't stress about it too much).  You will notice, that Madrileños are NOT dark or tanned unless they've been sunning themselves.  Very fair people by and large...the dark comes, some from the Moorish people (much more noticeable in the south), and the natives in the US.  (even you will be surprised).

Muggings:  stay away from Plaza Mayor and other major touristy sites after dark.  Be in a group after dark, and use taxis whenever you feel uncomfortable.

Dress modestly.  They are more modest and formal in Madrid than most US cities, and if you feel busty, try to diminish that the best you can...you'll feel more comfortable.

Yeah, I know ALL about that unwanted attention...both countries, but you notice it so much more in the South, where the Piropo is a form of art...(and also a form of personal invasion).

  2. Remember although this isn't your home make it your home away from home.  Blend in and that includes your everyday look.  As mentioned, dress modest without so much attention as much as possible.  Keep people around you thru socializing.  You'll be fine by using common sense and staying alert even if sometimes you travel or walk around by yourself from time to time.  Make sure to get in early even though now the sunsets later in the day.

  3. Yes! Be very carefull in the Metro and Plaza del Sol, there are a lot of pickpockets. Always carry your bag close to you and dont leave it unattended, not even for a minute in crowded turist areas. These people are pros!

Other than that, enjoy. Its a beautifull city.
