Dinara Safina was forced to retire from her fourth round match at the Australian Open with a recurrence of the back injury that forced her out of the Tour Championships in Doha last year. Safina had been working on her recovery during the pre-season, but was forced to pull out the Brisbane International in the lead up to the year’s first Grand Slam. Sadly for Safina, the injury has returned at Melbourne Park. Said the Russian after the match on her troubles: “My back again. It suddenly hit me. It was getting worse and worse. I have no idea really how it could happen. It's really, really terrible.”
