Dinara Safina was the form player of the WTA tour in the first half of 2009.But how long did it take the Russian to win her first title last year? Things obviously aren’t going as well this year with back problems keeping the world No. 2 out of competition.

Safina won her first title of 2009 on the fourth occasion she’d reached the final of a tournament, at Rome at the beginning of May where she defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova in the final (Kuznetsova turned the tables in the final of the French Open not too long after). By that stage, Safina had already been runner-up at Sydney, the Australian Open and Stuttgart for the year.
