Hello, I am planning a trip feb and march to costa rica, to get away from my crazy lifestyle and write some books in a natural secluded enviorment. I have my street smarts after living in nyc for 8 years, but will be traveling alone 90 % of the time down there. will I be safe for the most part, being a female traveling alone? I wanted to live in a bungelo in the jungle or a villa away from it all.......is that safe? i've never been there...

and which side do you prefer, caribbean or pacific

thanks alot

  1. hey...

costa rica is safe. san jose (capital) is where the crime is...

but still, is one of the safest citites(latin cities) of america

the bungaloo or anything like that would be outside of san jose.

thats great, you should go for it

the 2 coast are different. you can be at puerto viejo, cauhita or at tortuguero in the caribbean...

in the pacific you can go to pavones, dominical, uvita montezuma, mal pais, carrillo... and much more places cuz the coast is bigger

also you can go to monteverde that is great and the mist there is amazing

    come and enjoy it

  2. pacific is much more safe than caribbean

i travel alone with my friends (all females) but were locals, we recognize a who is costarican and whos not, there common rules that you have to learn what not to do in every place: just dont be entrusted, dont do "rides" to others, dont walk alone late at night, dont show cameras or stuff like that, this could be a tentation to thieves... dont accept invitations for drinks or shots from people in a bar, just be carefull on that and you be safe

  3. CR is like NYC for safety.  If you stay in the right neighborhoods, stay out of the bars, keep your head about you, be careful of going out at night unless you know the neighborhood, and walk with a hand over your pocketbook, you will be fine.  I lived in Alejuela which is a city, but not like San Jose.  I felt safe, but I stayed in at night.

  4. I travel to Costa Rica alone all the time, to get away from it all and have traveled to most of the country.  Yes I am a male, but I have been in San Jose walking around late at night and never have felt threatened.  And I have never had any problems anywhere else.  You will love it.  And the Costa Ricans are wonderful people, just the best.

  5. I live in San Jose CR, I just visited the Caribbean side, it's exactly what you are looking for.... If you want I can send you some photos I took. The pacific side is beautiful although it's more of a party and people place than an "away from it all" place...

It is very safe if you are traveling outside the central area, although you always have to be careful not to leave a door open or a suitcase unlocked or carrying a big amount of money....

Good luck coming over here, it's always nice to take a time off and think!
