Saginaw goes for record breaking victory in the Alex M. Robb Stakes
The 6-year-old Drawing Away Stable owned, Saginaw, will be going for his 11th victory of the season in the $75,000 Alex M. Robb Stakes at Aqueduct, and become the horse with most wins in North America for 2012. Racing will resume at the Big A following a nine-day break.
It will not only be a huge occasion for the New York bred son of Peruvian, but also for trainer David Jacobson, who has tied up with trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. for most victories by a trainer at this circuit. David Jacobson has currently saddled 106 victories for the calendar year.
Saginaw, under David Jacobson’s wing has won 9 races out of 11 starts, and has gone on to earn $477,600 in total earnings. Saginaw posted a scintillating 13 ¼ length victory in the 70 yards race over the inner track, which prompted trainer David Jacobson to buy Saginaw for $30,000 on behalf of himself and the Drawing Away Stable.
Things have looked up ever since, and his only bad start in the colours of his current owners was in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap (Met Mile) at Belmont Park, where he finished sixth to winner Shackleford on 28 May, 2012.
Saginaw’s defeat in the Met Mile could be attributed to the fact that he was called back to race after a rest of just nine days, and against four grade 1 winners.
Out of Devil’s Bag mare Devilzene, Saginaw has gone on to win on ever dirt surface over the four NYRA tracks, and he has won races ranging from 6 furlongs to 1 1/16 miles, as he is currently coming off victory in the 6 furlong dash called the Gravesend Handicap at Aqueduct Racetrack.
“He had to run really hard to beat” Royal Currier, Jacobson said Friday. “I thought it was going to be a little easier race than it was. It turned out he had to run hard. It took a little out of him. Right now, everything looks good. We’ll be there.”
The Alex M. Robb Stakes will be run over a distance of 1 1/16 miles at the Big A, and Saginaw will break from post number five under jockey Junior Alvarado.
