Saginaw’s fiery season continues…
The 6-year-old horse by Peruvian, Saginaw, continued his amazing run for this season, and with victory in the Gravesend Handicap, he has now registered 10 victories in 13 starts for this year, and overall he marked his seventh stakes victory of his career.
It was an impressive victory by Saginaw, who under rider Junior Alvarado, who was riding Saginaw for the first time. Cut back in distance from 1 mile to 6 furlongs in the Gravesend Handicap, the pair turned one over Royal Currier who finished second, as Isn’t He Perfect finished third on the day.
Saginaw covered 6 furlongs in 1 minute and 9.40 seconds at Aqueduct’s dirt track. Bred in New York by Ted Taylor, Saginaw has raced at New York all his career, and holds a remarkable record in stakes races, as he has never attempted grade 1 races.
That is exactly what Drawing Away Stable represents as managing partner of the stable, Robert Hachemeister Jr., explained that Saginaw means a lot to the partnership, and represents what they stand for. "He exemplifies what our partnership is trying to do. We are blue collar guys who want to run with the big dogs, and Saginaw signifies that the little guy can succeed if he tries hard enough."
Trained by David Jacobson, Saginaw thrilled his connections after his brilliant victory in the Gravesend Handicap. "The feeling is indescribable. Winning an open stakes against a horse like Linda Rice's Royal Currier is huge. It's the biggest win of his career."
Out of Devilzene by Devil’s Bag, Saginaw was coming into the Gravesend Handicap off of a victory in the Fourstars Allstar Handicap also at Aqueduct Racetrack, but in that race he ran over a distance of 1 mile.
He showed his versatility over distances, and managed his 9th victory of the season by defeating Friend Or Foe in second and Johannesburg Smile in third with the winning time of 1 minute and 35.62 seconds.
Next target for Saginaw is the $75,000 Alex M. Robb Stakes again at the Big A, and if things go as planned, Saginaw will bag another overnight stakes race for Drawing Away Stable.
