Sagna: We must win for Wenger
Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has said that Arsenal must win something this season or risk losing Arsene Wenger to a bigger club.
Arsenal have not won a trophy domestically since they lifted the League Cup back in 2007. Sagna says that a number of clubs would give anything to have Wenger as manager and it's important for the side to pay him back for his faith.
Sagna is one player who was given his chance in English football by Wenger. The Frenchman seems to have a brilliant ability of taking players from unknown backgrounds and turning them into Premier League stars.
Sagna will have a big part to play in the coming season now that Sol Campbell and William Gallas have left the club. If it is do or die for Arsenal this year then Wenger's possible departure could be horrific for the club.
Sagna's role
Sagna is going to have to be much more responsible in terms of his defending this season. Last season Arsenal had solid experience in the central defensive positions that allowed Sagna to get forward as a full back.
With Campbell and Gallas now gone and other players still developing and learning, Sagna is going to have to be more disciplined. He will still get forward but he will have to fill in gaps when others fall out of position or the side will get punished.
Arsenal will need leaders and Sagna is the sort of player who can step up. If Cesc Fabregas leaves the club as some expect he will in the near future then Arsenal will need a new captain and a new vice captain. Sagna could be a candidate for either of these roles.
The defender said: "I don't need to say how important the boss is to Arsenal. He has done great work at Arsenal and we want to win things for him. Everything he has given us we need to give him back. That is what we will try to do and it would be great to win something."
How long can he wait?
Arsene Wenger has created the modern day Arsenal but he is still a human being and he may soon get fed up with empty expectations as each season comes and goes.
He has not really been in charge of a side that has dominated English football since the 2003/2004 season and this is now a very long time ago. If he does leave at some point in the next couple of years then the whole philosophy surrounding the club will change.
Sagna added: "I don't know if it will be his last season at Arsenal. We just want to play and give back the trust he gave us. The contract situation is not a concern. Our job is on the pitch. We just want to stay focused on the pitch, to do our work, and after that everything will be fine."
Betting advice
At the moment Arsenal are a punt for the Premier League title. Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are all in much better positions to mount a strong title challenge.
The likes of Robin van Persie, Niklas Bendtner and Andrey Arshavin all have the potential to finish the season as top scorer for both club and in the league. However, for them to top score in the league means that Arsenal will need to have a blinding season, which just is not likely.
The best chance they stand of winning something will come in either the League Cup or the FA Cup where they can go for it during single matches.
