Question:

Sailboat design question?

I've noticed that some designers repeat the same design for different sizes. Is one size going to be better than the other? do the formulas translate the same on the same lines? I know speed will be effected, but what about all of the other performance factors considered in sailboat design. Thanks!

  1. The answer to your question has eluded sailors for years.  There are some basics that are well understood but some Boats just work better than others.  In modern times factors unrelated to the hull design have made huge differences in "scale" when it comes to requirements for comfort or interior.  Sailboats continue to evolve and who knows, there may be the perfect boat out there for you

  2. This is a really open ended question. There are to many variables to answer it adequately. The complexity of designing boats is akin to designing aircraft; are you trying to go fast, slow, comfortably or bare bones. Length of water line means increased speed, unless you have planning hull. Then there are Catamarans, Trimarans, and Mono hulls. Stability factors and power supply factors. Certain designs do translate to a different sizes but there are thousand of variables involved. There are some very good books on boat design but even there you are looking at a library of different bookd
