Sailboats.. Trailerable? Garagable? Partial Ownership? Simplist solution?

I really want a SMALL sailboat I can keep in my garage that I can (mostly) cruise around the harbor here in Long Beach but also be able to take it for an overnighter at Catalina. I was looking at the Potter 15.. It could sleep my and the wife but mostly be a harbor cruiser. It's a first sailboat and I wanted to keep it in my one car garage. Any suggestions? I was also looking at Catalinas (boats) but I'm not sure how small they are as far as garaging them....

What about partial ownership?

  1. share ownership can be  a great way to get a boat you may not be able to afford by yoursefl - however care needs to be taked when selecting a partner. All needs to be organised for all eventualities.

I have been in several boat ownerships and due to careful initial planning, who has the boat when - responsibilities etc etc all has worked out fine every time

  2. Here's a qreat question/statement:  Are you interested in the activity or the object ?  Sleeping, easting, getting lucky is always easier, (ultimately cheaper), & more comfortable on dry land. I suggest a one design centerboard boat like a Flying Scot.  http://www.flyingscot.com/history.html

It is a stable boat good for learning to sail or teaching someone to sail on. You can dip the mast in the water abeam in calm water & NOT swamp the boat in calm water. There is a large market for used boats so it is quite economical , & easier to buy/sell. I raced 'em in the midwest inland lakes & Lake Erie for 5 years. They hold up to big blows if you have enough rail meat for ballast. They can be single handled & can carry 4 people in a good breeze. Best is as a 2 person boat. For Regattas & fun some folks arrange a 4X8 plywood panel in cockpit for a sleeping platform. Check website for local info & I am sure someone will get you out for a sail.  Good luck , fair sailing
