  1. Depends on the boat; I wouldn't wear deck shoes on a Sunfish.  My current boat is a Hunter 170; sometimes I'm barefoot, sometimes I wear my white-soled sneakers (depends on the temperature).  Once I wore my sandals (strapped, not flipflops); ironically, we capsized that day, and I was pleased to discover that they acted like mini-flippers, helping me tread water while I righted the boat.

  2. I'm leaving for sailing camp in an hour!   I'm wearing sandals with straps.  Flip flops are not a good idea.  Wear sandals that have a strap on the heel.  If you don't have sandals, then old tennis shoes will work also.  Good luck!

  3. Wear what they call "deck shoes".  They reisist water damage and infiltration are mostly non-slip, which is especially important on a sail boat.  Happy sailing!

  4. You need to wear deck shoes. They are neutral color on the soles and will grip the deck even when it's wet.

You can get more information on the kind of shoes you need at

    Enjoy camp!
