Sailing courses in the UK?

Question

Hi, I would like to start sailing (starting with a keel boat) and would like to know how much it costs, how long it takes and what kind of certificate I would get. Is is similar to a driving license?

I went to the RYA website, but it is not telling me much, it is setting the levels, but I would like to know what qualifications I need to be able to sail on my own.
