  1. it all depends on what it is you fear, if it is heeling (the boat tipping), multi hulled boats like catamarans and trimarans dont tip much, unless in high wind, but if you capsize, you are Screwed, but on the Mediterranean you should be relatively fine

  2. This summer we chartered a catamaran (2 hulled boat) in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.  (Caribbean)  It was mostly really calm, there were a few rough spots, but other than that it was really fun.  I think the fastest that we went was 13 knots.  By the way, are u going to have it crewed, if u don't get over this fear of sailing, I don't know if u should be chartering a boat by ur self.  By the way, if u are afraid of keeling over too much a catamaran is perfect.  Monohulled boats keel over much further.

  3. I have sailed across the Pacific, in the Med, in the North Sea, near Australia, and in the Caribbean.

"Calm" is not good if it means no wind.  I spent three days bobbing around 1000 miles offshore in one race.

I STRONGLY suggest a charter in the british virgin islands for your purpose. The winds there are modest but steady.  Water and wind are warm.  You are never out of sight of land, and the landfalls are easy and friendly.

There is plenty of rum available too, if that's what floats your boat.

  4. The Mediterranean is a land locked sea. That's not a guarantee  that it will be calm, but it would be calmer than most open oceans.
