  1. If you live near the water, the choices are wide open to you.  Find a local (or close) yacht club and ask around if anybody needs crew.  Some clubs even have "crew schools".  Most bigger sailboats need a deckhand or two and if they race, they really need crew.  You will learn a few things and have fun.  It is a real good way to start your sailing adventure.

  2. Chapman's Piloting is the bible of sailing.  Go to www.sailnet.com and begin to communicate with people there and they will help you.  Cruising World and Sailing World are good magazines.  Browse through used book stores in areas where there are cruisers and marinas and most likely you will find many gems.  Best of luck.

  3. Sailing Fundamentals

    Cruising Fundamentals

    Chapman Piloting

    Bowditch

    Storm Tactics

    Adrift

    66 Days Adrift

    Weather Predicting Simplified

    The Voyager's Handbook

Wm F Buckley Celestial Navigation Simplified DVD

Annapolis Book of Seamanship. Book and DVD's

Go to Youtube.com and type in "learn to sail". There are some nice videos there, some by expertvillage has trashy audio. Try some other there. Many sailing related videos from cruising ICW to large ships crashing.

  4. sailing is amazing.

but umm theres one that i useed a while ago called "start sailing right!" it alo has other books made by the company called "Basic Keelboat" "Bareboat Cruising" "coastal navigation" these would probally help if you want to sail around the world the author is US sailing.

  5. Try the RYA website. It will explain what courses are available and once you know the names of the courses and the content, this will help you choose resources http://www.ryatraining.org/training/.

the RYA Dayskipper theory course will help you a lot with navigation. Experience is also very useful, but you are more likely to get this if you have some training behind you.

Also read the blogs of people who are long term voyaging.

I followed the Bumfuzzle couple almost from start to finish http://www.bumfuzzle.com/

I am preparing for sailing round the world too.
