  1. A lot of helmsman prefer to sail on the leeward side when wind velocity permits.  It gives increased visibility under the head sail.  Your question is very vague though.

    Normally if you're sailing by the lee it means your sails are not set properly and it's time to jibe so you're no longer by the lee.


  2. It's actually sailing by the lee and when you go down the run, to be on a dead run you sail with your stern pointing at the wind. If you go by the lee on starboard, you pull the tiller towards you a little and you can sail by the lee. If you pull it too far though the sail will gybe and you can quite easily hit your head on the boom.
