Saina Nehwal needs to work on her physical fitness for the World Championships 2011 – Badminton News
Indian Women’s Singles shuttler, Saina Nehwal, needs to work more on her physical fitness to produce better results in the Badminton World Championships 2011, which will kick-off from August 8, in England.
The 21-year-old Saina, who is currently World Number Four in the international rankings of women’s singles, has been struggling hard for the last six months, but has been unable to win any Super Series event this year.
By playing three back-to-back events in the current month, the Indian was a little slow in the final match of the Indonesia Open Premier Super Series 2011, where she lost to Wang Yihan of China, who is currently World Number Three.
Saina, who was looking for a hat-trick in Jakarta, where she emerged as the winner in the previous two editions of the Indonesia Open, failed to continue her winning streak this time as she seemed a little tired.
After the final contest of the event, national coach of India, Pullela Gopichand said, "Yes, she surely has been inconsistent, but that is not something to worry about as she has had some really good wins as well. It was close. In fact, Saina actually served
on match-point at one stage. She was unlucky."
He further added, "Her fitness was a bit down, and that's something she needs to work on, but overall things are fine. I'm sure she will be back at playing her best at the World Championships (to be played in London from Aug 8 to 14)."
While talking about Saina’s plans for the World Championships, Gopichand said, "She returns to training immediately and will now on the World Championship. Also, the Olympic qualification is on her mind."
Saina lost the final match of the Indonesia Open in three sets with a margin of 21-12, 21-13 and 14-21. In the current year, she has won only one title in the Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold 2011. She is yet to win any Super Series event this year, however, she
is expected to shine at the world meet in August.
