Saina Nehwal succeeds while Diju, Jwala fail to proceed in group stage of 2012 London Olympics
The second day of London Olympics was mixed day for India as its shuttlers put varied performance in group stage at Wembley Arena on Sunday, July 29, 2012.
The badminton queen Saina Nehwal easily surpassed her first hurdle in group stage but the prime Mixed Doubles team Diju V-Jwala Gutta failed in their second encounter and came closer to a woeful exit from the mega event.
Women’s Singles expert Saina trounced Swiss shuttler Sabrina Jaquet while Diju-Jwala got pale in front of Danish pair Thomas Laybourn-Kamilla Rytter Juhl.
World Number five Saina started her campaign in perfect manner and registered her presence with a rapid straight-set victory in a Group E match.
She dictated her opponent throughout the opening match and emerged as victor with an impressive result of 21-9 and 21-4.
The Indian campaigner kick-started her proceeding straight away in the beginning of first set as she clinched five valuable points in a row to pile up a mountainous total of 6-1.
She maintained this rhythm also in the next rallies and finished the first half with a notable difference.
Though, the Swiss shuttler showed some strength in second half but it was not enough to avoid a 9-21 defeat.
Next game was also played in same manner as Saina Nehwal did not show any mercy and transformed her 1-0 lead into a straight-set win.
She stamped her supremacy in all areas of the game and raised hands as victors with an overwhelming score of 21-4.
Now she is scheduled to meet Belgian female player Lianne Tan in her next encounter of group stages.
However, it was not all well for Indian badminton lovers as their top Mixed Doubles shuttlers disappointed them by putting a below par performance in Group C showdown.
The twosome Diju V and Jwala Gutta could not form a fruitful chemistry against Thomas Laybourn-Kamilla Rytter of Denmark.
They failed to rise in both games and surrendered after reading final figures of 12-21 and16-21.
This second failure has buried their chances of glory in the mega event and now they will compete against the Korean pair Lee Yong Dae-Ha Jung Eun without any hope of proceeding in the London Games.
