Saint Jack produces shock win at Nottingham
Saint Jack was hardly the favourite for the Nottingham Produce Stakes final, in fact he was not even considered the best chance from his own kennel.
But he turned over both market leader Micky Robbie and Brendan Harris's more fancied runner, Rainham Reg, to land the £15,000 prize at Colwick Park on Wednesday night.
Saint Jack was quickly out of the traps with Micky Robbie never far away and turned in second place but could never quite get on terms as Saint Jack prevailed by three-quarters of a length in a time of 29.92sec. Rainham Reg - who was bumped by Micky Robbie when they exited the traps - ran a good race in the circumstances to finish a good third.
The market said that the Emily Wood Memorial Puppy Trophy was a one-dog race and Droopys Oscar confirmed that with another smart performance as he stopped the clock at 28.72sec, and Seamus Cahill's dog – who took his record to seven victories from eight starts - cemented position as a leading contender for next year’s William Hill Greyhound Derby.
One of the other impressive displays of the evening came in the Molson Coors Stayers’ Trophy. There was plenty of money for Slaneyside Mitch and the money was only ever on loan.
Slaneyside Mitch, trained locally by Margaret Roberts, was always on the pace and put the race beyond doubt from the fifth bend for a six-length victory in a time in 42.00sec.
