Saints’ QB Brees puts on hold all contract talks to concentrate on winning – NFL News
New Orleans Saints can’t stop winning and quarterback Drew Brees who has played an impressive role in that achievement wants more.
The Saints star quarterback has put on hold all contract talks on an extension till the end of the season as he looks to concentrate on winning games.
"You know, I didn't want it to become a distraction," Brees told The Times-Picayune. "And from the discussions we had, going back and forth, there was no progress really being made. I really wanted to just focus on football.”
The Saints are on a five-game winning streak, and top the National Football Conference South with a playoff divisional spot secured. They will face lowly Minnesota Vikings on Sunday and a victory at the Mall of America Field will
ensure the Saints playing all their playoff games at home.
Brees does not want his contract situation to overshadow the Saints season and has thus decided to shelve the talks, for now.
"It's been tabled for now ... and just hopefully will resume when the time is right." Brees said.
Brees has been phenomenal for the Saints this season as he hopes to take the franchise to their second Super Bowl title in three years. He has created 32 passing touchdowns covering 4,368 yards completing 385 passes out of 543
attempts for a 70.9% pass completion rate.
The quarterback is also second in ballots for the Pro Bowl just behind Green Bay Packers Aaron Rodgers and above rookie Carolina Panthers passer Cam Newton.
The 32-year-old’s contract talks have dragged throughout the season and Brees could potentially become a free agent. However, the Saints have the option to tag the quarterback for one more year if a deal cannot be reached.
Brees will be looking to increase his earnings greatly from the new deal and get a contract on par with the ones given to Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and Tom Brady who make between $ 72 million to $ 100 million
apiece.
With contract talks on hold till the end of the season, Saints management will have sufficient time to make an offer that attracts their star quarterback.
Brees led the Saints to the 2009 Super Bowl title beating Indianapolis Colts in the showpiece match and will be looking to manage a similar feat this season against a different opponent, of course!
