Sakio Bika discussed again in Super Six developments
Reporting outlets have indicated super middleweight contender Sakio Bika will be fighting Allan Green in the third round of Showtime’s Super Six boxing tournament. The fight will reportedly be in Quebec, despite a contractual clause stating it be in the
United States.
Following the withdrawal of Mikkel Kessler from the tournament, five remaining contestants were thought to be reduced to four, with latecomer Green backing out to simplify matters. However, Showtime executive Ken Herschman recently said that the tournament
will go through with its third round stage as oppose to a semi-finals and find an opponent for Green.
Herschman would have wished to go directly into the semi-finals, but promoters of the four relevant fighters said they preferred the original third stage since they didn’t want to lose profits that would come from penciling it out of the tournament.
Earlier this year Green and Bika were scheduled to compete to determine a replacement for Jermaine Taylor after he bowed out following a bout with Arthur Abraham. The fight was all but a done deal until Bika claimed he was frustrated with the money offered
and the terms, at which point Showtime determined to de-facto include Green.
In recent months the tournament has accrued wide-reaching criticism after several setbacks have pummeled its credibility. Since Taylor’s withdrawal, Abraham has been disqualified, Kessler withdrew, a Froch injury delayed a bout with Abraham, and the Andre
Dirrell-Andre Ward bout failed to secure a venue for its original date.
At the conclusion of the tournament, in 2011, the remaining participants will have offered two and a half years of their prime time to the competition, which has been riddled with unplanned drama and alteration.
It is expected that a victor will take on IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute in a unifying title bout after the tournament.
