Sal Alosi resigns as New York Jets coach
New York Jets’ strength and conditioning coach, Sal Alosi, has resigned from his position as coach.
Alosi was the coach, who was caught on tape, sticking his knees out and tripping Miami Dolphins’ Nolan Carroll at the sidelines. The Jets immediately suspended Alosi without pay and investigated the incident further.
The investigation revealed that Alosi had instructed the Jets to stand close together at the sidelines to put pressure during special team plays. Initially Alosi didn’t cooperate with the Jets and in response the Jets slapped him with a $25,000 fine and
suspended him indefinitely.
Now the disgraced coach has handed in his resignation.
“After the events that have transpired, I feel it's best for my family and me to look for a fresh start”, Alosi said in a statement released by the Jets today.
At first Alosi denied instructing players to form a wall. He said that the tripping incident was ‘inexcusable and irresponsible’. Later he confessed everything but made sure not to implicate anyone else in New York’s coaching staff.
Special teams coach Mike Westhoff denied any involvement or even knowledge of the Alosi’s tactics on the sidelines.
However, Westhoff did accuse the New England Patriots of doing the same thing on the sidelines. He said that while reviewing tapes to see if Alosi had created a sidelines wall before, he noticed the Patriots on the sidelines standing shoulder to shoulder.
The New York Jets were fined for Westhoff’s accusations.
The NFL fined the Jets $100,000 dollars. In a statement the NFL said that each club was responsible for the conduct of each one of its employees and was obligated to report any violation or suspected violation of NFL rules and regulations to the league.
It found Westhoff in violation of those rules by publicly accusing the Patriots and not reporting his suspicion to the NFL.
The Jets would be relieved to finally put the incident behind them, although they didn’t comment on the future of Alosi with the Jets. “After speaking with Sal, he decided that it is best for him to tender his resignation at this time”, General Manager,
Mike Tannenbaum said.
Tannenbaum added that the Jets appreciated Alosi’s contributions to the club over the years. “He played an invaluable role in our success and established what we feel is one of the better strength and conditioning programs in the NFL”.
