Question:

Salary Negotiation?

I was asked about the expected salary at my interview recently. I told them ofcourse it depends on job responsibilities as well as the range that they offer for this position. The interviewer was silent and I told her what I am making now. Before I was told by a friend that their salary is lower than my current one but later I found out that theirs is pretty much the same, do I have room for negotiation?

  1. You have room for negoiation until you have accepted the position.  However, next time, when they ask about salary ..and you say it depnds....you could then ask.."can you tell the salary range for the position? "  You can then say, "based on my experiece and skill, I would expect to be in the ...(midle, top end, etc)....

  2. The 3 stages of negotiation are

    Preparation, Interaction and Agreement.

A company typically prizes hiring the most appropriate candidate above all else. If you are the most suitable person for the job, there is definitely room for negotiation.

Before accepting the position, you can ask for additional benefits such as higher pay.

If they are unable to meet your salary demands, you can always try to create the win-win situation by asking for other benefits such as additional vacation days or other non-monetary benefits.

You will need to be prepared to justify these additional claims by proving your worth to the company. To persuade the company to grant additional vacation for instance, you could sweeten the pot by offering to take up additional duties or responsibilities for instance.

The negotiating technique of the "Red Herring" where you distract the other person from the main issue by raising minor issues is also applicable in this case.
