I realize that all Opera companies are different, but do any of you know what the average starting salary for an opera chorus member is?

  1. $12+/rehearsal; $100+/performance is what i found at one website, another said that they pay 900 for the whole run, including the rehearsals.  hope that helps a little!

  2. You're right- it does depend on the company. The big ones pay more: the Met pays about $100,000 a year, while San Francisco pays $60,000, and Chicago pays about $40,000 for an 8 month "year". These are for full-time positions though.

There are also supplementary chorus members who only do a few shows a year, and at the Chicago Lyric they get paid around $50.00 an hour. It can come out to about $4000.00 per show, depending on which opera it is and how much rehearsal time is needed.

If you are looking for a particular company, try looking at the AGMA website. (the American Guild for Musical Artists- our union) It has most of the contracts on there, and you can search each for how much they pay.

    Hope this helps!!
