One of the selectors of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Azhar-Mahmood-c1116 in the on-going Indian Premier League (IPL) but made it clear that he has to play the domestic cricket in Pakistan,
if the all-rounder wants to revive his international career.
Azhar has been out of international cricket since the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013, and T20 cricket all around the world since then.
Mahmood took part in the inaugural season of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 Premier League (BPL) as well and performed well with both bat and ball. No Pakistani players are taking part in IPL because of the political differences between the two countries. However, because of
British citizenship, the all-rounder was bought by Kings XI http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Punjab-c833 in this year’s auction.
The all-rounder has been doing a brilliant job for his franchise and has made an impact on the tournament. Even his captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Gilchrist-c918 has lauded the performance of the discarded Pakistani all-rounder.
While speaking to Pakpassion, Jaffar, who is an integral part of the selection committee, admitted that Mahmood looks to be in tremendous form and his age should not be a hurdle behind international selection. However, the selector expressed that Mahmood
must play the domestic cricket in Pakistan, if he still wants to represent the country internationally.
“Azhar has all these attributes but I must reiterate that he needs to start appearing in domestic cricket in Pakistan before we can select him. The onus is on Azhar, he hasn’t appeared in domestic cricket in any of the tournaments since 2010 and priority
for international selection will be given to those cricketers who have featured in domestic cricket,” Jaffar expressed.
The former left-arm fast bowler added that the all-rounder’s performance in county cricket may be considered by the selectors in future as it is a more authentic mean of gauging a player’s ability.
“Azhar has performed well in the Bangladesh Premier League and the Indian Premier League, but what I am looking at is performance in English County Cricket and domestic cricket in Pakistan,” he added.
