Salery Question when working in two departments....?

Lately I've been working in two different departments in my company, which is a huge global company. My original position is a coordinator/Secretary for a group of medical therapists where I make 9 an hour. Its full time and I've been here since January.

The last couple months I've been working in customer service, the cs reps make more then the receptionists.

The past couple weeks I've been working in CS more and more since they've needed me. 5 of the last 10 days were spent in the CS department, the other 5 in my Secretary position. My work in my original job is getting piled up because I've been in the other department so I take it home to work on.

I applied for the open CS position back in June, but they just took the posting down off the web and told me it was on hold due to some some problems the company as a whole was facing. well were over that bump now and I still haven't heard anything but I still continue to do half my work up there.

I dont care that I do both. But I think its unfair that I make so little money for doing so much. I like my jobs and the people are a lot of fun to work for. Should I talk to my direct boss about a raise or nonchontley ask if I'm getting paid more since I've been doing cs so much....

What should I do?

  1. Yes, you are being taken advantage of here. They took down the CS posting because they have conned you into doing both jobs, and only being paid for the cheaper one. They will not appreciate this or promote you. In fact, they'll just look at you as a sucker who will do extra work all the time, for free.

First of all, STOP taking work home. That's crazy, if you are paid hourly.

Second of all, let you boss know that you are happy to help out in customer service, but you need to be paid at the higher customer service rate for the time you spend in there. Any modern payroll system can separate the two.

Also let your boss know that you would be happy to switch to CS full-time, but as long as you are doing both, you may not be able to complete your secretary work. Trust me, your supervisor will get you out of CS real fast, if it's going to affect his (her?) department.
