Salim Iles - Jose Meolans nab Men’s 100m freestyle A and B Finals at Mare Nostrum, Barcelona: Day 3
Algerian swimming sensation, Salim Iles won the Men’s 100m freestyle A Final against Russian swimmers, Nicholas Folker and Andrei Kapralov at Barcelona, in Spain, on June 6. Iles completed his distance in the corresponding meet with a sterling time of 49.91
seconds, while Folker wound up second in a time of 50.44 seconds and Andrei Kapralov settled third in 50.49 seconds.
Salim Iles is a well-known swimming icon from Algeria, who has won many fabulous titles in several swimming events such as the All African Games, African Championships, Mediterranean Games and World Championships.
Meanwhile, Fernando Scherer of Brazil was placed fourth in the Men’s 100m freestyle Final A meet with a time of 50.94 seconds and Denis Pimankov of Russian finished fifth in a time of 51.34 seconds. Zsolt Gaspar of Hungary surprisingly wound up sixth with
a time of 52.45 seconds.
In the Men’s 100m freestyle B Final, Jose Meolans of Argentina clinched the first spot with a fastest time of 51.68 seconds, while Jorge Ulibarri of Spain was placed second in 51.76 seconds and his team-mate, Eduard Lorente settled third in a time of 52.14
seconds.
Meolans is a popular swimmer of Argentina, who has won gold medal in the Men’s 50m freestyle final at the 2002 World Championships in Moscow. Besides, he has grabbed golden crown in the Men’s 100m freestyle final at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo.
Placed fourth in the respective event was Clay Kirkland of USA with a time of 52.26 seconds, while Juan J Torrado of Spain settled fifth in a time of 52.51 seconds. Leonid Khokholov of Russia finished sixth in 52.59 seconds. Rafael Castellano of Brazil was
surprisingly placed seventh in 52.81 seconds.
In the meantime, Susan Rolph of Germany won the Women’s 100m freestyle title in the A Final with a winning time of 55.91 seconds. Placed second was Sandra Volker of Germany with a time of 56.41 seconds, while Yevgeniya Yermakova (KAZ) wound up third in a
time of 56.51 seconds.
Finally, Courtney Cashion of USA captured the Women’s 100m freestyle crown in the B Final with a victorious time of 57.68 seconds, while Mia Muusfeldt of Denmark earned second spot in 58.11 seconds and Susana Garabatos of Spain settled third in a time of
58.21 seconds.
