Salim Kerkar set to sign Rangers deal
Defending Scottish Premier League champions Rangers are set to complete the signing of winger Salim Kerkar this week.
The French-Algerian player has been on trial at Ibrox and has caught the eye of Rangers boss Walter Smith with several impressive showings at the Murray Park training ground and in reserve matches.
As the 23-year-old is a free agent, he can be signed without the transfer windows and Smith is hoping to cut through the red tape so he can snap up Kerkar, who is expected to sign a contract with the Gers
in the next few days.
The boss told his club’s official website that: "We are just trying to get the full background before we go on and complete that deal. He has been looking good so hopefully we can get a resolution to that
in the next few days."
Although Smith signed Vladimir Weiss on a loan deal from English Premier League side Manchester City over the summer, he still feels his squad are lacking natural width and reckons that Kerkar could be
the solution to the problem.
'Gives options on wings'
Smith added that: "He gives us options in the wide areas. He can play (on) either side and he has done well in the bounce games he has featured in. It will be a relief to the lad once things are sorted
because he has been around us for a while now and I think he will be glad to get everything over with."
Kerkar had spent three seasons with French club Guegnon, with whom he made almost 50 appearances. He also had a loan spell with Calais, where he played 36 times and scored six goals.
The player is the younger brother of Algeria international Karim Kerkar and is also said to be close friends with Rangers and Algeria central defender Madjid Bougherra, a likely factor in his prospective
move to the SPL giants.
