  1. I don't know about the best places to stay, but I have been to Salisbury Racecourse several times and it is a lovely place.

I am normally at the September meeting which is great fun.

As it is quite a small racecourse there won't be huge crowds, but on a Saturday in August you can expect it to get pretty busy, especially if the weather is good.

Longleat is about 25 miles from Salisbury so you would be able to get there in 30-45 minutes quite easily.

Check out Salisbury's website to see if they have any info on places to stay, etc:  http://www.salisburyracecourse.co.uk/

  2. I went to that meeting several years ago (and then on to Newbury) and it rained so hard after about the 4th race that the jockeys refused to come out of the weighing room for at least 20 minutes and I needed a push to get my car out of its parking place as the car park quickly became so muddy. Nevertheless it is a good track and because it has a loop at the beginning of the straight to accommodate the longer races there is good stand viewing up the straight from both sides of the track , which makes it quite a rare experience. The racecourse is located at Wilton a mile or two west of the city.
