Sally Fitzgibbons advance into the Quarter-finals at the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic
Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons put on an impressive performance to claim top honours in the fourth heat of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic’s Round 3 that continued at the Dee Why point in Sydney, Australia, on Friday, April 20.
The successful result for Fitzgibbons in the fourth round served to carry her directly into the Quarter-finals. Her competitors in the triple-threat battle Courtney Conlogue from America and Australia’s Rebecca Woods rounded out the second and third position
respectively, consequently getting relegated into the fourth round.
The clean four-to-six foot waves breaking at the primary event site promised a series of thrilling battles between the prestigious female surfers as they sought to advance forward in the fourth of seven stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals
(ASP) Women’s World Title Series.
Fitzgibbons, 2011 ASP Women’s World Runner-Up and current No.5 on the ASP Women’s World Tour rankings, took on Conlogue and Woods in the fourth heat of Round 3. Determined not to allow another upset to mark the third round, the 21-year-old Australian pushed
herself hard during the fourth heat.
Putting her local knowledge of the waves to use and utilising her experience to select the best waves of the heat, Fitzgibbons executed her manoeuvres cleanly to reach a heat-total of 14.25 points. The score received no serious challenge from any of her
rivals, enabling her to claim a convincing victory.
“I am stoked to be through to the Quarterfinals,” Fitzgibbons said. “It was always going to be a good battle with Woodsy [Rebecca Woods] and Courtney [Conlogue], they’re both surfing really well at the moment. It’s always nice to be fresh heading into the
Quarterfinals. I feel like I’ve got a lot of energy which is good considering we’ve had so many events back-to-back. It’s a nice feeling having the confidence knowing that I can post some big scores.”
Conlogue was forced to settle for runner-up place after finishing with a heat-total of 10.40 points, where Woods finished in third place after scoring a two-wave total of 7.75 points. Both the surfers still have a chance to get into the Quarter-finals by
putting a strong performance in their respective Round 4 heats.
