Sally Fitzgibbons and Carissa Moore move into quarter-finals at Nike US Open of Surfing
Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons and Hawaii’s Carissa Moore qualified for the quarter-finals at the Nike US Open of Surfing, the final stop on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour, after emerging triumphant in their respective
Round 3 heats that went down at Huntington Beach in California, America, on Wednesday, August 1.
Hawaii’s Coco Ho finished behind Fitzgibbons in second place during the third heat, while New Zealand’s Paige Hareb had to settle for bottom-place. Both the surfers got relegated into the fourth round as a result, having to surf again for a spot in the quarter-final
spot.
The fourth heat saw France’s Pauline Ado and Australia’s Laura Enever finish behind Moore in second and third place respectively, moving into the fourth round as a result.
The atmosphere remain electrified as the renowned female surfers from around the globe continued to battle it out for top honours in one-to-three foot waves that were on offer at the primary event site.
Fitzgibbons, ASP Women’s World No.2, found herself pitted against Ho and Hareb in a battle for a place in the quarter-finals. The 21-year-old defending event champion got her hands on a couple of good waves and utilised the opportunities to post a 5.83 and
7.33 on the score-board to finish with a heat-total of 13.16 points.
“The waves looked fun before we went out,” Fitzgibbons said. “I think the last bit of tide was draining out and it was a good battle with Coco (Ho) and Paige (Hareb). I just kept trying to find something that opened up. A victory here last year was insane.
Winning here was one of the ultimate days of my career and I’m looking to do it again.”
Ho scored a 6.50 off her first business wave and backed it up with a 5.30-point ride, thus finishing with a two-wave total of 11.80 points, while Hareb had to settle for a heat-total of 9.10 points, which included a 4.93 and 4.17-point ride.
Moore, 2011 ASP Women’s World Champion, managed to prevail over Ado and Enever in a low-scoring Heat 4 affair. She scored a 3.00 off her first business-wave and added an additional 7.00-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 10.00 points.
Ado and Enever finished with a heat-total of 8.83 and 4.97 points, thus getting relegating to the fourth round to have another shot at earning a place in the quarter-final stage.
